Louis Vuitton has unveiled the fruit of a new collaboration between Creative Director Marc Jacobs and artist Yayoi Kusama, a range of women’s products decorated with her emblematic brightly colored dots. The 82-year old artist was personally involved in the design of each piece in the collection.
A major Japanese artist whose work has been featured in exhibitions at leading museums around the world, Yayoi Kusama presents herself as a small dot amidst the immensity of the universe. Her work is characterized by artistic obsessions with motifs repeated in infinite arrays.
Marc Jacobs met the artist in 2006 in her Tokyo studio. Yayoi greeted him with a Louis Vuitton bag on which she had painted a multitude of dots. The designer was deeply touched and instantly won over. Six years later, an exciting range of Louis Vuitton products is born, revisiting Louis Vuitton products through this collaboration between two visionary creative talents.
Lockit, Speedy and Keepall bags, as well as small leather goods, ready-to-wear, shoes and other accessories all become new media of expression for Yayoi Kusama. Dots and other iconic motifs are featured in red and white, black and yellow, green and other vibrant colors. The collection recalls several of Kusama’s most famous works, including the well-known “Dots Obsession - Infinity Mirrored Room” (2008).
The collection will be available at Louis Vuitton stores from July 10.
