The Espace culturel Louis Vuitton is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Turkey until January 6, 2013. "Journeys. Wanderings in contemporary Turkey" invites us to discover a nation that sits between East and West, guided by the work of eleven artists from the Istanbul contemporary art scene.
"Istanbul has in recent years emerged as a major center of global contemporary art. New foundations and galleries continually spring up, along with the city’s Biennial," notes Hervé Mikaeloff, curator of the exhibition. The artists look at their country through the prism of travel, long a defining leitmotif for Louis Vuitton.
Murat Morova’s polyptych pays tribute to the beauty and immensity of Turkish landscapes. Halil Altindere invites us to Cappadoce for a surprising photographic mise-en-scene depicting an astronaut on horseback. Childhood and the past provide another rich vein of inspiration. Tayfun Serttas appropriates an amazing series of archive images in which 180 adorable little girls strike the same pose.
Some of the artists, like Canan, take a more critical and political stance. Entitled Ibretnüma, his video tale inspired by A Thousand and One Nights, questions the instrumentalization of the female body in Turkey. This new exhibition takes us on a compelling journey to the heart of a vibrant contemporary Turkey.
