The 20th exhibition at the Espace culturel Louis Vuitton features Mail Art. “Correspondences” proposes an introduction to this little known art form, which uses the post as an artistic medium.

Exhibition curator Erik Verhagen has taken an historical approach, beginning with rarely exhibited work by pioneering artist Ray Johnson. In the finest Dadaist and Pop Art tradition, his often poetic, sometimes amusing collages blazed a trail for the other artists featured in the show.

The work of Eleanor Antin, for example, figures at the crossroads between Conceptual Art and Mail Art. Her post card series entitled “100 boots” shows a hundred pairs of boots in unusual settings. The cards were mailed to 1,000 people, a manifesto that claims an art form available for everyone to make part of their daily lives.

Whether the content of a letter is known or carefully dissimulated, the works all resonate with an impalpable magic, as if they came from another era. In today’s all-digital world, the three generations of artists represented take visitors on a very real-world journey through time and space.

The show runs until May 5, 2013 at the Espace culturel Louis Vuitton 60 rue de Bassano – 75008 Paris Open Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 7pm, Sunday from 11am to 7pm.
