Identity
Founded in 1977, Newton Vineyard is one of the most prestigious estates in California’s Napa Valley. The famous American critic Robert Parker actually devoted an article to it in his reference work The World’s Greatest Wine Estates. Located on the steep slopes of Spring Mountain, the estate, spanning just about 260 hectares, produces wines that are vinified separately then blended together. Each of the 112 parcels is planted with a specific grape variety – merlot, cabernet franc, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon or petit verdot. With its close relationship to the surrounding nature, the estate alternates vines with wooded areas in order to preserve a vast array of biodiversity throughout the vineyards. In 1990, innovative Newton Vineyard launched Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay, one of the first unfiltered wines produced and sold within the United States, and which has become an international leader.

The Puzzle represents the most refined expression of Newton Vineyard wines. Produced exclusively with grapes sourced from Newton Vineyard vines in the prestigious Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder and Yountville appellations, this exceptional cru is the result of meticulous selection of fruit from the estate’s best parcels, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
The Puzzle expresses Newton’s dedication to working in harmony with nature. The wine has excellent cellaring potential.
Savoir-Faire
Located on the hillside, the estate features many terraces and has 48 hectares of vines which are planted at altitudes varying from 150 to 490 meters. This arrangement is ideal for obtaining a wine with complex fruity notes. Each parcel has a specific soil type, sun exposure and microclimate, which gives the wines a great variety of flavors and aromas. To get the very best from this diversity and preserve the character of each parcel, all the grapes are harvested by hand and vinified separately. This provides the wine maker with an exceptional palette from which the wines from Newton vineyards can be blended. Fermentation occurs naturally, with local yeasts, to protect the characteristics of the fruit and to contribute to the complexity of the finished blended wine.
Outlook
In harmony with nature, the Newton Vineyard estate strives to reduce its environmental impact during all the stages of the wine-making process. Parcels of vineyards are actually integrated into the indigenous vegetation in order to preserve the hillside’s ecosystem. In addition, the estate’s cellars have been built so that they regulate their temperature naturally, thus reducing energy consumption on the estate. Finally, all organic waste (grape stalks, pips, etc.) are collected and composted to be re-used as natural fertilizers in the vineyards. All glass and plastic waste is also recycled.
Newton adopts a long-term sustainable and balanced approach with 100% organic farming of the land. By meeting a host of requirements – including water conservation, energy conservation, pollution prevention and solid waste reduction elements – Newton has received the Napa Green Certified Land and Winery certification.
