Loro Piana opens a new center for knitwear excellence in Ghemme 

In Piedmont, Loro Piana has unveiled Ghemme, a new 8,000-square-meter center dedicated entirely to knitwear. The Maison’s first new manufacture in more than 30 years, the site brings every stage of the creative and production process together under one roof, from research and development to finishing. Set in a region closely connected to Loro Piana’s history, Ghemme offers a new home for one of the Maison’s most distinctive areas of expertise.  

The choice of Ghemme reflects this deep connection to the region. In 1987, Loro Piana established its worsted wool spinning mill on the site, in an area where textile expertise has been cultivated and passed down through generations. The original water tower and caretaker’s house have been preserved, with the latter now home to the Accademia dei Mestieri, dedicated to training the next generation in the specialized crafts of knitwear. 

Ghemme now brings together the full journey of Loro Piana’s signature materials, from cashmere and Baby Cashmere to vicuña, Merino wool and Pecora Nera®. Research, programming, knitting, assembly and finishing combine advanced technologies with highly specialized craftsmanship. The Accademia provides a place for these skills to be taught and passed on, while a dedicated educational space traces Loro Piana’s history and its expertise in knitwear. An exhibition of the Loro Piana Knit Design Award also celebrates the work of emerging designers inspired by the Maison’s materials and techniques. 

The architecture reflects the same care for material and detail. Generous openings fill the spaces with natural light, while wood, glass and hand-finished surfaces create a dialogue with the Piedmont landscape. Designed without fossil fuels and incorporating rainwater recovery and photovoltaic panels, Ghemme brings together craftsmanship, transmission and innovation in a setting designed for the future.
