AN ICON OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE

Designed by Frank Gehry, the Fondation Louis Vuitton building is itself a work of art — the Fondation’s first expression of creativity and ambition. Rising among centuries-old trees and reflected in a vast water basin, it engages in a subtle dialogue with its natural surroundings. Twelve glass sails envelop the white volumes that house the exhibition spaces, creating a silhouette that has become one of the defining architectural icons of contemporary Paris. As Frank Gehry explains, “Like a world in constant motion, we wanted to create a building that changes with the light and the passing hours, conveying a sense of movement and perpetual transformation.” Through its interplay of transparency, reflections and shifting perspectives, the building embodies the same spirit of openness, innovation and creativity that animates the Fondation’s cultural program.Realizing this architectural vision required an exceptional level of technological innovation. The complexity of the structure and the unique design of each component — from the 19,000 Ductal® ultra-high-performance concrete panels to the 3,600 glass panels — led engineers to adapt industrial processes to an unprecedented level of bespoke craftsmanship. The dialogue between glass, wood and steel represents both a technical and aesthetic achievement. The Fondation Louis Vuitton also served as a pilot project in the development of a new HQE® (High Environmental Quality) framework, reflecting its commitment to environmental excellence alongside architectural innovation.

    ART IN DIALOGUE

Since opening in 2014, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has become a major platform for artistic creation and cultural exchange. Through its Collection, exhibitions and multidisciplinary programming, it brings modern and contemporary art into dialogue with ever-wider audiences, helping to foster a deeper appreciation of artistic creation in France and around the world. At the heart of this mission is a Collection that continues to grow and evolve, bringing together works by leading artists including Gerhard Richter, Ellsworth Kelly, Thomas Schütte, Pierre Huyghe, Bertrand Lavier, Christian Boltanski and Jeff Koons. In constant dialogue with the Collection, the Fondation’s exhibition program celebrates both the great figures of modern art and the artists shaping contemporary creation today. In 2025, the Fondation presented two exceptional retrospectives devoted to David Hockney and Gerhard Richter. The David Hockney exhibition, spanning more than seven decades of creation and featuring over 400 works, attracted more than 900,000 visitors. The Fondation also continued its “Open Space” program, dedicated to supporting emerging contemporary artists, welcoming Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen for a site-specific immersive installation conceived for the Fondation’s spaces.Beyond Paris, the Fondation extends its cultural reach through its Hors-les-Murs program, which brings works from the Collection to Louis Vuitton spaces around the world. In 2025, a unique partnership with the Musée d’Orsay and the J. Paul Getty Museum enabled audiences in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York to discover masterpieces by Gustave Caillebotte. At the same time, the Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka hosted an exhibition dedicated to Yayoi Kusama as part of Expo 2025 Osaka, offering visitors a journey into the singular creative universe of one of Japan’s most influential contemporary artists.Music also plays a central role in the life of the Fondation. Conceived as a space for creation, transmission and encounter, its Auditorium welcomes concerts, performances and artistic projects throughout the year, encouraging dialogue between disciplines and audiences while opening new pathways to cultural discovery.www.fondationlouisvuitton.fr
