LVMH Métiers d’Art is proud to present "Scars of Light” by Shu Yonezawa, whose creations result from the program’s 9th Résidence Artistique, its first in Japan.
This new body of work was premiered to Japanese media and VIP guests in Ibara City ahead of an official exhibition in Paris from October 24-31.
This edition features acclaimed Japanese anime and multimedia artist Shu Yonezawa, who spent six months prior to the exhibition immersed in the world of denim craftsmanship at Kuroki, the renowned denim master in Ibara City, Okayama. During her residency, the artist was totally engaged with Kuroki’s artisanal processes, from the dyeing of indigo yarns and the intricate design of weave structures to the use of vintage shuttle looms. Going beyond the simple making of jeans, Shu Yonezawa re-envisions the fabric as a soft yet resilient “universe” where “scars of light” become living beings.
Reflecting on her experience, Shu Yonezawa shared: “Over these past six months I have had countless opportunities to see things for the first time and to look at them from different angles. Exploring new landscapes and immersing myself in the rhythms of Kuroki’s factory was both refreshing and inspiring.”
This year’s residency exemplifies the commitment of LVMH Métiers d'Art to fostering emerging artistic talent and championing innovative approaches to traditional craft, spotlighting today’s dynamic landscape of Japanese artistry.
