RIMOWA announced the winners of the third iteration of its  RIMOWA Design Prize at a ceremony on May 13 at the prestigious Gropius Bau in Berlin.

The prize celebrates the creativity and engagement of the next generation of emerging German design talent.  Upholding RIMOWA’s values of resilience, transformation and timeless design, the prize furthers its commitment to visionary, inclusive and sustainable design.

An expanding network of 39 leading German universities took part in the call for projects around the theme of mobility. Following a two-month mentoring period with design industry leaders, seven finalist projects were selected for their innovative approach and ability to address tangible social challenges.

They include a discreet wearable heating device to address menstrual discomfort, a mobility aid for people suffering from dementia, an ergonomic crutch that promotes independence and dignity, and a portable smart device to monitor air quality. The projects all share a new vision of design that is functional, human-centered and centered on addressing current needs.

The top prize of €20,000 was awarded to the Hottie project conceived by Elisabeth Lorenz and Marc Hackländer, a bold and discerning concept that redefines the codes of utilitarian design. A special mention award of €10,000 recognized the Standalone project by Niels Cremer and Tom Kemter, and the five other finalist projects received €5,000.

With the RIMOWA Design Prize, the Maison once again affirms its key role in preserving and passing on unique know-how and creativity by crafting the tools of tomorrow for a world in movement.
