On the legendary Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Hublot and FIFA have unveiled the official countdown clock for the upcoming Soccer World Cup, to be held in Brazil in just a year’s time.
Jean-Claude Biver, Chairman of Hublot, launched the countdown in the presence of numerous officials, including Brazilian Minister of Sports Aldo Rebelo, FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke, and football legend Pelé.
The giant clock in Rio de Janeiro, together with the equally enormous time pieces set up in São Paulo and Brasilia, were commissioned from Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The project was one of the last to be carried out personally by the 1988 Pritzker prize-winner before his passing in December 2012. The clocks stand as a powerful symbol for the country, which has been waiting impatiently to host the event since 1950.
The event underscores Hublot’s commitment to football. A partner to UEFA and the Euro in Poland and Ukraine in 2012, the Maison also works with prestigious clubs including Manchester United and Bayern Munich and top players such as Colombia’s Radamel Falcao.
