As Riccardo Tisci celebrates his 10th anniversary as Givenchy’s Creative Director, the storied fashion house staged an exceptional runway show for its Spring/Summer 2016 collection in New York. A spectacular event in pure Givenchy style.

The American market played a crucial role in Givenchy’s beginnings, and Hubert de Givenchy, the founder of the eponymous House, always held New York City close to his heart. Riccardo Tisci, in turn, marked his 10 years as Givenchy’s Creative Director in New York. On September 11th, the designer presented his love-themed catwalk, staged on the banks of the Hudson River in a décor built entirely out of recycled materials. The event coincided with the opening of Givenchy’s new flagship store on Madison Avenue, entirely conceived and designed by Mr. Tisci himself.

Riccardo Tisci, who has always surrounded himself with a community of creative talents, designed the New York event with one of his close friends, performance artist Marina Abramovic. Fascinated with the sacred and the emotional bonds that link humans to one another, she invited four musicians to sing spiritual chants from all over the world during the show, while seven other artists contributed live performances alongside the runway. The show was organized as a moment of sharing, celebration and openness, and was projected on giant screens set up in different parts of the city. Fashion students, neighbors and resident New Yorkers made up half of the audience.

The clothes Riccardo Tisci designed for the collection revisited his past 10 years with Givenchy. It all came together around one key idea: blurring boundaries. Whether this means blending haute couture and street fashion, masculine and feminine, mysticism and rationalism, strength and fragility, the designer is a master at inventing poetic and emotionally moving creations. The centerpieces of his collection were haute couture silhouettes that reinterpreted Riccardo Tisci’s emblematic inspirations, with fitted masculine suits made of fine translucent lace borrowed from the most sophisticated lingerie: a truly daring world of contrasts.
