La Samaritaine has continually metamorphosed and evolved since the opening of the first store in 1870, progressively becoming one of Paris’ most striking architectural icons. The building proudly expresses an avant-garde identity in the heart of the French capital. Now La Samaritaine is poised to carry on this vision with a major renovation project conceived with the architecture firm SANAA. The plan totally revisits the spaces with an emphasis on fresh openness and clarity, transforming La Samaritaine into an emblematic expression of modernity. This forward-facing approach informs every aspect of the project, from the commercial offering and best environmental practices to protection of the architectural heritage, while introducing dynamic architectural creativity and elegantly integrating the urban fabric.

The renovated complex will span over 70,000 square meters and include a department store, a Cheval Blanc luxury hotel with 72 rooms and suites, as well as subsidized housing and a day care center, leading to the creation of 4,400 direct, indirect and induced jobs.

After three years of renovation work, the new Samaritaine will open its doors in the fourth quarter of 2018.
