ABOUT THE ROLE:
Are you ready to take your tax expertise to the next level? Reporting directly to the VP, Finance & Strategy, with a functional link to the Director, Tax North America, the Senior Tax Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping the company’s Canadian indirect tax strategy. This dynamic position places you at the forefront of compliance, audits, and providing crucial tax insights to support innovative company initiatives. WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Tax Compliance:
- Prepare and submit monthly GST/HST, QST, and Provincial Sales & Use Tax returns, along with all necessary supporting schedules
- Manage the payment process for indirect taxes through a third-party payment agent
- Handle provincial and city business tax preparations and payments
- Administer the Ontario First Nation’s Rebate program, including preparing the annual report
- Prepare annual sales schedules for Canadian income tax reporting
- Review and approve reconciliations of all Canadian general ledger tax accounts
- Respond to tax-related inquiries from customers and vendors and address and resolve tax notices
Audit Management:
- Manage all Canadian indirect tax audits on behalf of the company
- Develop audit timelines and negotiate testing methods with auditors
- Gather and organize audit data, reports, and source documents for auditor review
- Analyze proposed assessments and provide recommendations on whether to accept or appeal the results
Process Improvement, Training & Projects:
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance compliance with Canadian indirect tax laws
- Develop and deliver tax training and reference materials for internal teams (e.g., Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets)
- Liaise with external tax consultants and advisors
- Participate in Finance and Tax initiatives as required
Other Responsibilities:
- Conduct tax research and provide clear, understandable guidance on Canadian indirect tax matters to internal stakeholders
- Handle other duties and projects as required
WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
- 8+ years of experience in Canadian indirect tax, including managing tax audits, tax reconciliations and tax research
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field required, CPA designation considered an asset
- Experience with SAP and Vertex, or other ERP systems and third-party indirect tax software
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain tax concepts to non-tax audiences at all levels
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is required
- Proficiency in MS Excel and database access
- Experience from a recognized accounting firm is considered an asset
- Indirect tax experience in the retail industry highly preferred
