This autumn, Fondation Louis Vuitton will devote its entire exhibition space to Gustave Fayet, bringing together 728 works and documents for the first comprehensive exhibition of the French collector and artist. Gustave Fayet. Collector – Creator offers a rare opportunity to discover the full breadth of his career, bringing his collection of modern art together with his own work for the first time.

The exhibition opens with highlights from Fayet’s collection, assembled in the early 20th century around some of the leading figures of modern art. It includes 10 paintings by Vincent van Gogh, 78 works by Paul Gauguin and 86 by Odilon Redon, alongside works by Cézanne, Degas, Matisse, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Bonnard. Dispersed after Fayet’s death in 1925, the collection has been reunited for the first time in a century through loans from institutions and private collections around the world.

The exhibition also reveals Fayet as an artist in his own right. A painter and watercolorist, he explored the decorative arts, creating ceramics, textiles, wallpapers and carpets. Shown together with the works he collected, these creations offer a glimpse into an artistic practice that moved freely between fine art and the decorative arts.

Among the highlights are Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe, which has not been shown in France since 1937, and three major works by Gauguin – The Yellow Christ, Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ and The Breton Calvary – which will be brought together in France for the first time.

The exhibition is the result of several years of research and features a scenography by Robert Carsen, two books co-published with Gallimard, and extensive documentary research into Fayet’s collection. Gustave Fayet. Collector – Creator will be on view at Fondation Louis Vuitton from October 9, 2026, to March 8, 2027.
