Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche is presenting the exhibition“Objets divers et variés” (“Myriad and miscellaneous objects”) by Chinese artist Song Dong from January 10 to February 22, 2026.
For over ten years, the storied department store has celebrated contemporary art each January, featuring an artist in an exhibition in the very heart of the store. After Ai Weiwei in 2016, Joana Vasconcelos in 2019, Daniel Buren in 2024, or Ernesto Neto in January 2025, Song Dong takes over the entire store with his exhibition entitled “Objets divers et variés – 百货 (baihuò)”
A major figure in Chinese contemporary conceptual art, Song Dong transforms everyday objects to give them a second life, creating new stories and imparting fresh meaning. For this new exhibition he has conceived a monumental work spanning display windows, installations beneath the store’s glass roof and an interactive experience on the second floor. Two immense chandeliers frame the central escalator, while an immersive installation stretches across the second floor. The ensemble becomes an artwork infused with meaning that explores the memory of everyday objects, consumption and the passage of time, while paying tribute to the history of French art.
“I love the idea that visitors who have chanced upon the exhibition are able to discover my work without anticipating it, making their discovery an integral part of the experience,” Song Dong says. “At the same time, art lovers morph into clients as they go through the exhibition, creating opportunities to change identities.”
