The legendary Art Nouveau décor of Maxim’s welcomed “Club Kenzo”, the new Kenzo collection by NIGO.

The Artistic Director takes cues from Andy Warhol’s Factory, Kenzo Takada’s Parisian studio in the 1970s, and his own community of creative contemporaries.

The new collection blurs genres and styles, celebrating a carefree love story between The Kenzo Guy and The Kenzo Girl. The wardrobe-crossed lovers take style cues from each other, serious about their look but having fun with their fashion. Playful elements are manifest in the cast of animal characters that reappear from one show to the next. This time we meet Quique the Tiger and Kali the Bunny, merging unlikely friends to create a more beautiful world. Bunnies with tiger stripes appear on a coat and a visible body suit whose straps hang down nonchalantly. The mix of prints include florals from the Kenzo archive, notably a revival of a rose print favorite of founder Kenzo Takada. Polka dots, stars, checkerboard and harlequin shapes create a new graphic universe.

Multiple references to punk aesthetic and graffiti culture contrast with classics and superb Italian tailoring. Hot pink dinner jackets become daywear and Japanese tailoring becomes a new statement for eveningwear rendered in fine satin. The silhouettes defy gravity in platformed bowling shoes, while the mule brings comfort to streetwear. Bags have a lived-in patina, customized with spray paint. Playfulness spans the entire collection, even on belt buckles, a smiling reminder that fashion need not always be taken seriously.
