The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, has unveiled the interiors of L’Observatoire, conceived by artist JR.

The most exclusive and spacious accommodation on the train, the sleeper carriage is the first ever designed by an artist.

Known for expanding the boundaries of storytelling through art, JR has applied his distinctive practice to a meticulous curation of L’Observatoire. Alongside Atelier Philippe Allemand, a partner of the train since 1997, they have revisited the marquetry throughout the carriage, creating new motifs, including an urban cityscape with JR standing on a rooftop, connecting with his canvas of choice, city streets.

L’Observatoire is an artwork in motion that pays tribute to the train's rich history of timeless crafts. Inspired by both astronomical observatories and Renaissance Europe's cabinets of curiosities, the sleeper carriage replicates the spirit of JR's Parisian art studio with personal keepsakes, inviting guests to immerse themselves in a world that ignites curiosity.

Gary Franklin, Vice President Trains & Cruises at Belmond, says: “Intended as an ‘artwork in motion’, L’Observatoire will offer an unparalleled blend of art, luxury, and immersive storytelling. JR’s thoughtful integration of exceptional craftsmanship is evident throughout, resulting in a truly unique and transformative travel experience.”
