The secrets held by legendary Louis Vuitton trunks have inspired some of the most illustrious names in French literature. Invited to delve into the archives meticulously collected by Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the grandson of the House’s founder, the authors present their highly personal interpretations in a collection of short stories published jointly with Gallimard, entitled La Malle (“The Trunk”).

With his passion for trunks, the ultimate symbol of nomadism and undiscovered worlds, Gaston-Louis combed through newspapers in search of articles about how trunks were put to use. Now his collection of press clippings, photos, and other news items, amassed over the years, has been rediscovered and brought into the spotlight.

Authors Éliette Abécassis, Marie Darrieussecq, Virginie Despentes, David Foenkinos, Philippe Jaenada, Yann Moix, Véronique Ovaldé and several others took up the challenge and agreed to immerse themselves in these astonishing anecdotes. Eleven writers recount eleven stories – a captivating chance to hearken back to the art of travel during the Belle Époque era.

David Foenkinos, the author of “Delicacy”, retells an episode starring famed magician Harry Houdini, who agreed to an escape challenge involving a trunk specially designed by Louis Vuitton. In his short story, the novelist paints a previously unseen portrait of the great illusionist. La Malle is a poetic, almost fantastical way of revisiting the history of Louis Vuitton.
