Company overview

“Everything I do is a matter of heart, body and soul,” says Donna Karan, chief designer of Donna Karan International, which was established by Karan and her husband Stephen Weiss in 1984.

Karan credits her feminine instincts for the wide appeal of the Donna Karan New York Collection brand. The Collection centers on seven easy pieces, where a handful of interchangeable items work together to create an entire wardrobe that goes from day to evening, weekday to weekend.

The brand is designed to speak a multi-cultural language of fashion with the international woman and man in mind, though rooted in the street-smart style of New York.

Based on the success of this design focus, Donna Karan has grown to be a full lifestyle brand, for men and women. In addition to apparel, it includes handbags, accessories, lingerie, eyewear, bedding and tableware, beauty products and best-selling fragrances.

The brand is available in department and specialty stores worldwide, including a fast-growing presence in new markets such as China and Korea. Dedicated Donna Karan New York Collection stores, including flagship locations in New York and London, are a significant part of the more than 200 store locations operated by Donna Karan International around the world.

Donna Karan has received international recognition for her work and the Council of Fashion Designers of America has saluted her six times, most recently nominating her in 2010 for the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award.

Using the Company’s visibility for social causes is a heartfelt priority. Among many impactful initiatives, Karan conceived and spearheaded the annual “Seventh on Sale” benefit to raise funds for AIDS awareness and education. In 2007, she founded the Urban Zen Initiative, to create a working structure to advance wellness, preserve culture and empower children.

Donna Karan International was acquired by LVMH in 2001. The Company continues to thrive today based on the success of its Donna Karan New York Collection and DKNY brands.
