Nicholas Kirkwood launched his eponymous collection in Spring 2005 challenging the conventions of women’s luxury footwear. To date, he has gained much critical acclaim for his spirited collections, which feature a blend of genres subverting the relationship between tradition and modernity.
Kirkwood’s creations focus on the interpretation and reimagination of curvilinear forms. Sharp and considered, Kirkwood’s designs feature unexpected fabrications and techniques with intricate detailing. “I design for a sophisticated woman with an implicit understanding of luxury who has a strong defined vision of herself and her personal style.” Nicholas Kirkwood.
An alumnus of prestigious design schools Central Saint Martins and Cordwainers College, Kirkwood has been recognised for his vision with numerous awards including the BFC Vogue Designer Fashion Fund in 2013, and Accessories Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Kirkwood launched his first stand-alone men’s collection for AW13, presenting at London Collections: Men in January 2012. Beyond his own label, he has worked alongside established and emerging Ready-to-Wear designers to create show shoes for their runway. In September 2013, Nicholas Kirkwood announced his partnership with fashion conglomerate LVMH Group. With a shared value in design and innovation, Kirkwood continues the international expansion of his brand and development of his creative vision.
The Hepworth sandal is a signature Nicholas Kirkwood piece. It is synonymous with the brand’s distinctive attributes and values: shape, form, studied lines, unexpected elements and highlights, and a unique use of contemporary fabrications. A favourite among celebrities its sophisticated, harmonious and graphic proportions make it a timeless style.
Craftsmanship plays an integral role in every collection and Nicholas Kirkwood’s ability to merge his contemporary approach and ideas pushes creative limits. Entirely handmade in Italy, the production of his shoes is executed with acute precision and attention to detail at each stage. The materials are of the highest quality and carefully chosen alongside the development of custom-made leathers and fabrics resulting in extraordinary creations.
Nicholas Kirkwood continues to increase and strengthen its presence, brand awareness and customer connectivity in key markets through a focused, global retail strategy. With three flagship stores in London, New York and Las Vegas, and 150 points of sale at leading department and specialty stores worldwide, Kirkwood has opened a succession of considered and brand aligning pop-up stores over 2014. The temporary pop-up spaces reinforce existing points of sale and have catered for its loyal customers as well as introducing a new clientele to its ethos.
